In partnership with the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation’s (OLSHF) SVS program the Yachats Lions along with the two other clubs (Waldport/Newport) in Lincoln County successfully screened 3181 students in the fall of 2024. In total there were 48 volunteers that included 21 Lions Club members. We screened at both Lincoln County School District and charter schools with a result of a total of 755 (24%) students being referred for an eye exam.
The State of Oregon provides funding by reimbursing approved organizations (Public School Districts, Charter Schools, ESDs and approved organizations like OLSHF) for screenings conducted. They receive $4 per student for each screening conducted at public schools, out-of-state and Private schools are not reimbursed. This subsidy provides somewhere between 1/2 to 2/3 of the funding for the SVS program.
