Autumn Lukens – Oregon Hazards Lab: Advancing Multi-Hazard Monitoring in the Pacific Northwest

The Oregon Hazards Lab (OHAZ) at the University of Oregon is at the forefront of using science, technology, and community engagement to understand, detect, and mitigate multi-hazards in the Pacific Northwest. They’ve deployed and maintain over 60 wildfire detection cameras and 232 seismic monitoring sites that deliver data to the USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System. The program partners with local, state, and federal agencies and organizations to expand their access to tools that increase public safety and resilience. Their goal is to be international leaders in using hazards monitoring to support stewardship of place and to inform societal responses to climate and land-use changes.

Autumn Lukens is the Communications Assistant for the Oregon Hazards Lab, and a recent graduate of the University of Oregon. She’s spent her academic career focusing on the connections between the changing environment and policy decisions. She’s previously worked for the Council of Western State Foresters and Our Children’s Trust. At OHAZ, she’s done it all; from seismic site visits to testifying in front of the Oregon Legislature. Autumn has a passion for science communication and is incredibly proud to be a part of an organization that bridges the gap between science, policy, and communication of public safety.
