SWIFTY – Providing homes for birds in need
SWIFTY is a group of volunteers based out of Yachats who build, install and monitor nest boxes for ducks, owls and song birds. SWIFTY’s main focus is helping the swallow family, with 250+ boxes installed for Tree and Violet-green Swallows and 90 boxes for Purple Martins. The illustrated talk will explain the ecology of these species, highlighting the important role of bird nesting boxes and the challenges these birds face due to climate change and other factors.
Walter (Wally) Orchard and his wife Christine have lived in Yachats since in 2007. As a founder member of SWIFTY he has been involved with the construction of hundreds of bird nesting boxes. When he is not building and installing bird boxes, Wally spends time growing orchids, riding his bike on the gravel roads around Yachats, and working with the Yachats Trails Team.
